Characteristics of the simulation loop at UniBwM, designed for the development of autopilots based on real-time machine vision, are discussed. It comprises modules for state computation from control inputs, computer generated imagery, one-degree-of-freedom image projection, physical three-axis angular motion simulation and interfaces for image sequence processing and 4D-scene understanding. Different simulation levels are discussed as have been used during the development of the visual autopilot for VaMoRs, the fastest fully autonomously guided road vehicle presently operating.
