Areivew of gear vibration monitoring techniques is presented. Many of the techniques presented in the litrature were evaluated in a laboratory gear test rig. Gear damage was induced by removing lubrication, subjecting the gears to excessive torque loads and the deliberate introduction of test dust into the gearbox. This damage was detected using casing acceleration, bearing relative displacement and shaft relative displacement techniques. The signals obtained from these transducers were analysed using several different methods, many of which had been previously employed in a study on monitoring rolling element bearing condition. Generally the results described in the following sections show that gear and baring wear was best detected using spectral trend parameters. Time domain parameters were found to be either less sensitive or less consistent in detecting failure. With regard to measurement techniques casing acceleration was judged to be the most convenient method of detecting gear and bearing wear.
