The self-contained starter in a military aircraft consists of a small gas turbine driving the main engine through a reduction gearbox. In recent years, a number of failures of these gearboxes have occurred. In one case, the load was removed from the starter turbine which accelerated and burst, causing extensive damage to the engine and airframe. To reduce the risk of further failures pending the introduction of an overspeed cutout on the starter, advanced methods of vibration analysis were applied to the in situ testing of the starter gearboxes in the entire aircraft fleet. Further studies of the gearbox vibration have provided valuable information on the mode of failure of the gears and on other factors affecting the life of the gearbox. (Wassmann)
