Thermoplastic matrix composites offer many potential for use as primary aircraft structures. However, the high cost of these materials and their processing has limited their use. Automation is a critical need, but has been difficult to justify for the low quantity production runs typical in aircraft manufacture. Currently under development are low-cost rapid cycle processing techniques, one-step forming and consolidation methods, and efficient assembly techniques utilizing welding or co-consolidation. By incorporating these methods with increased automation, the use of thermoplastic matrix composites will become cost-effective for future generation aircraft.
