Two new technologies have been presented that can produce significant gains in composite manufacturing productivity. Water soluble tooling based on FastCore is an enabling technology that offers better manufacturing efficiency and higher part complexity. Ceramic cutting tools offer additional choices to machining operations and can produce qualities better than conventional tools. Patented water soluble tooling technology based on AquaPour and AquaCore was originally developed by Advanced Ceramics Research (Tucson, AZ) and has been commercially available to the composite community via Advanced Ceramics Manufacturing (Tucson, AZ) for several years. It was designed to enable manufacturing processes for forming complex composite structures, have fast washout times, and be environmentally friendly. Advanced Ceramics Manufacturing has recently developed a second generation material technology - FastCore. The FastCore technology introduces a new approach to the production of hollow parts utilizing a soluble core. Prior technologies including plaster, molten salt, and bladder material each has its own limitations.
