Noise and vibrations have so many features in common that they are frequently linked when referring to reduced comfort problems in accommodation spaces. They differ in the main frequency ranges of interest, although there is some overlap in the way in which they are measured and assessed and in their effect on human comfort and on machinery reliability. The impact of noise and vibration on the living quarters is termed 'habitability' in this paper, unless specific reference is made to one or the other of these phenomena. Because of the importance of passenger comfort the design techniques necessary to prevent excessive noise and vibration are subject to continuing theoretical and practical developments. It is intended therefore to present a brief overview of the subject matter together with a more detailed treatment of selected topics. As serious problems may cause loss of trade it is very desirable to take all reasonable steps at the design stage to avoid the need for later costly modifications. Numerous procedures have therefore evolved which go beyond or supplement the normal classification requirements. This paper describes typical noise and vibration prediction techniques and some steps that can be taken to avoid problems at the design stage, during construction and in the event of problems developing during trial or in service. Views expressed in the paper are those of the author and are not necessarily those of Lloyd's Register.
