The Lateral Thrust Units can be used as lateral or stern unit to give a ship good maneuver possibilities at low velocities. With this units the possibilities of transversal movements of the ships are given, what makes the ships undependable in the harbours and usable in dynamic location (maneuvers in the fog, offshore activities, navigation in the channels, execution of underwater activities, etc.). The influences of the LTU are examened, the positive and negative influences are given. To rise the influence of the LTU, Schrottel has built in a second tunnel, the so called Anti Suction Tunnel. The influence of the AST and these variants (propeller or jet driven AST) are explained. To the end of the year 1987, 280 ships have been operating with installed AST units, which makes a remarkable value of this units. (Jarc)
