The concept and operation of a dynamic simulator for testing automotive hub unit and cv-joint assemblies (including drive shafts) is presented. The test facility described is capable of simulating the six major environmental parameters (torque, speed, steer motion, jounce motion, and vertical and lateral road forces) experienced by an automotive hub unit and cv-joint assembly during service. The test machine uses a modification of the 'four square' mechanism together with the Remote Parameter Control technique to perform real-time simulation of measured road conditions. The application of this facility to the evaluation of a hub bearing unit and cv-joint assembly performance is presented.
