This paper presents the results of a research program to enhance the steering performance of GM SD40-2 3-axle locomotive trucks under a range of typical track curvatures, without degrading high speed stability performance. In this study, non-linear steady state curving and time integrated hunting simulation techniques were first used to identify the effects of modifications to key truck parameters. Test locomotives were then modified and field tested using both on-board and wayside instrumentation to validate the theoretical findings. In the field tests, the wheelset/truck frame steering angles, wheelset angles-of-attack, lateral curving forces, and wheelset and truck frame acceleration levels at different speeds were all recorded and analyzed. All simulation findings were confirmed by field test results. Presently, the recommended modifications are being implemented on CP Rail.
