The techniques used to design and apply triple modular redundant (TMR) computer-based safety control systems for the North Sea offshore production industry are described. The effects on the increasing safety awareness of the industry are discussed. In particular, references to the implications of the HSE guidelines and emerging international standards with respect to design, validation and training methods that should be applied through the life cycle of the project are reviewed.
