Offshore oil and gas platforms require safety-shutdown systems which meet or exceed the reliability of land-based systems. Programmable logic controllers configured in duplication or triplication schemes improve safety-system reliability, increase versatility, accelerate project scheduling, and reduce instrumentation costs. The main safety systems on a platform are: process/utilities alarm and signaling; emergency shutdown; fire-and-gas detection; heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; event recording and data acquisition; man-machine interfacing. Although such functions are traditionally performed by discrete-logic hardware, in the project described, programmable logic controllers perform the first four functions and personal computers perform the remainder.
