The signal combines an improved version of the traditional motorway indicator with a variable message sign (VMS) capable of displaying a wide range of information to the motorist. The new signal will not only be able to advise the motorist of speed restrictions, lane closures, diversions, etc, but will also indicate the reason for the restriction. In addition it will be used to give motorists warning of problems sufficient distance in advance of an incident to allow them to divert, if they so wish. It is anticipated that the additional driver information provided by the new signal will minimise queues and congestion, permitting more efficient use of the motorway, and increase the motorist's response to signals, thereby improving safety. The signal has been designed to integrate into the second generation National Motorway Communications System (NMCS II) and has been specified so that it can be used to assist in the overall management of the motorway/all purpose road network using techniques currently under development.
