A spacecraft soft docking system is studied from the viewpoint of attenuation and shock absorbing characteristics. The phase of velocity matching and that of attenuation in the soft docking process are investigated by utilizing an experimental docking test facility which includes an electromechanical actuator and an air-lifted docking target. A design method for a control scheme for the soft docking system is presented and tested for the velocity matching phase and attenuation phase.
