On 18 May 1990, the world rail speed record rose to 515 km/h during a high-speed test run of a French train a grande vitesse (TGV). The author looks at the French TGV which have now set a world standard in speed, comfort and efficiency using new designs and innovative technology. The power lines, the TGV Atlantique project and the Channel Tunnel are also described.
