The computer-aided acquisition and logistic support (CALS) program is an evolving data/information resource that has and will permanently change the way business is conducted between the DOD and private industry. CALS is proving the importance of digitally expressing and exchanging product data in a global marketplace. CALS is a multi-phase program that dealt with defining key elements, including standards, in its first phase. In the second phase the standards adopted in phase I will be further implemented and advanced. A list of core standards, the cornerstone for CALS and the key to its success, is given. Although the CALS effort between the services has been cooperative each service has a slightly different focus. The author discusses the further cooperation caused by bringing the services together in one location. The author also discusses the use of CALS to solve problems with complex weapon systems.
