As the world moves into the electronic age, it is becoming best practice within industry to develop and produce defense products with the assistance of, if not dependence on, computer aided engineering, design and manufacturing technology. Many new weapon systems are so complex that they can only be designed and managed by computers. Computer integrated manufacturing and just-in-time inventory control are revolutionizing the manufacturing process as computers are put to work. To orchestrate and accelerate these trends, DOD initiated computer-aided acquisition and logistic support (CALS). CALS substantially will increase capabilities within industry and DOD in the development, acquisition and use of the underlying technical information related to weapon systems and other equipment.
