The main uses of storage batteries on railways are considered as related to security of power supplies against internal faults or mains outages. Details are given of applications at traction and signalling substations, switching stations, 'no-break' computer systems, telephone exchanges and level crossings. The fundamentals of battery maintenance are outlined, and experience in some of the listed applications is summarised. Technical characteristics are presented with reference to Belgian standards. Reasons for preference of lead-acid before Ni-Cd batteries are given.
