Currently the United States Army's tactical command and control systems rely, to a great extent, on landlines to pass data on the battlefield. A Group Technologies communications terminal, the AN/UGC-144, could ease some of the present limitations and help to usher in a new data communications era. It will become the first user terminal to have a data adapter control mode. Current landlines may now be only a part of the communications channel from a computer data base in a location remote from the battlefield to a tactical terminal. Such a channel might include satellite or other radio links to reach the battlefield, with the final link to the tactical terminal established via landlines.
