The developments in the technology of permanent magnetic materials, power MOSFETs and microcontrollers have opened the way for significant advances in electric vehicle drive systems. Permanent magnet motors exhibit less than half the losses and more than twice the overload capacity of the motors they replace. MOSFET power convertors can operate at much higher switching frequencies, are easier to drive, have lower losses and are likely to be much cheaper than power conditioners using bipolar transistors or force commutated thyristors. Finally, modern single chip microcontrollers have the power to manage all aspects of the drive control and still have the capacity for battery management. The incorporation of these new developments into electric road vehicles is likely to bring them one step closer to viability.
