Among the measurement facilities for the speed of sound in the ocean, meters constructed on the principle of follow-up balancing, and particularly frequency-time (VIS) that have higher metrological characteristics are compared with pulse-cyclic (annular) meters are of considerable interest. The VIS meters have a pulse output signal, whose frequency is proportional to the speed of sound. A VIS is described in which high measurement accuracy is assured because of automatic elimination of the delay from the duration of the sounding interval. The operating principle of the VIS is elucidated by means of a block diagram.
