Millimeter wave radar seeker heads for smart munitions are being developed in the 35 and 94 GHz wavelengths. Dual-mode millimeter wave and infrared sensors also are being developed and tested for all-weather smart munitions by Telefunken SystemTechnik GmbH, Ulm, West Germany. This technology is being supported in a corporate collaboration with other German and French companies. An antitank drone called the Taifun is being developed for the German government with Telefunken SystemTechnik providing the sensor technology for a monopulse frequency modulation continuous wave radar in the 35 GHz range with Doppler beam sharpening. Dornier, another German aerospace company owned by the same Deutsche Aerospace parent corporation as Telefunken SystemTechnik, is the subcontractor for sensor signal processing. Also under development for the German armed forces is an intelligent weapon designed to be fired vertically downward from an external dispenser mounted on the belly of a Tornado multirole combat aircraft.
