An examination of fiber optics development programs reveals that the evolution of fiber optics technology and its growing use in the defense and private telecommunications industries provide dramatic improvement in the performance of many defense systems. But this also is not without obstacles-both economic and technological-to the wider employment of optics based systems. While many applications of the technology are promising, current fibers are not capable of meeting radiation requirements for avionics, shipboard and battlefield use. Growth in Defense Department spending on both tactical and nontactical systems that will employ fiber optics is expected to increase by as much as 45 percent per year, although defense budget cuts may well slow the rates of growth. Primary areas of emphasis are avionics, electronic warfare, command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I) and navigation.
