The concept of a head up display (HUD) for automotive use was proposed over 20 years ago and a small number of experimental devices were developed and installed in motor cars for evaluation. An example of this is described by the author. These systems had severe limitations due to the state of development of display technology and automotive instrumentation. However, over the last 15 years HUD's have been developed and used in military aircraft, and the author shows how this technology may be adapted for use in automotive applications.
