Reviews the application of the current generation of trackers employed in monopulse secondary surveillance radars (SSR). Prediction accuracy and the effects of multipath obtained from field derived data are also examined. In future civil ATC systems, operating in Mode S, the monopulse SSR sensor will also become a two way ground to air data and telemetry link to discretely addressed aircraft. The developments in this field are driven by the United States FFA Air Traffic Control Radar Beacon System and Mode Select Beacon System programmes which specify a common tracker for both monopulse SSR and Mode S. Monopulse SSR sensors incorporating trackers based on these specifications are now deployed throughout the world and the paper reviews the initial findings from the practical implementation.
