One of the tools in use at Ford Motor Co. to develop vehicles that are light, inexpensive, and strong is our vehicle bending and torsion test facility. Operated by the test engineering and services department of engineering and manufacturing staff, the facility measures the stiffness response of a vehicle body-either a complete vehicle or a stripped-down body shell (body-in-white)-to a static bending or torsion load. Vertical deflection of the loaded body is sensed and relayed to a personal computer for reduction and analysis. The test is conducted by selecting functions from a menu written in ASYST software.
