Gerstenlager, a venerable auto-part producer, employs a new hydraulic press line, in a new plant, for production of Class-A auto panels. The Macrodyne five-press hydraulic line now running in Clyde occupiesa slice of a huge 180.000 sp.-ft. facility on 84 acres of land. Leading the line is a 2500-ton double-action hydraulic draw press with a 500-ton NC cushion - 165 in. left to right, 70 in. front to back with 12-in. stroke - giving the press an effective capacity of 2500 tons. It can handle banks to 180 by 96 in. and features an 88-in. punchholder stroke with 127 in. of daylight, and 65 in. of blankholder stroke with 104 in. of daylight. Trailing are four 1250-ton hydraulic presses, with the same partsize-holding capabilities. These offer 120 in. of daylight and 70-in. stroke. The line uses seven GE Fanuc robots for part transfer, blank loading and part unloading. One idles behind the draw press, ready to flip parts over should the need arise - if a part requires upside - down drawing on the lead press and must be reoriented for the rest of the line. Class-A steels form the bulk of material fed into the new line, thus far in thickness from 0.030 to 0.042 in. Die changeout comes courtesy of a T-type rolling-bolster system - two bolsters for each press, all 180 by 96 in. - also supplied by Macrodyne.
