The author outlines the development and application of 25kV, single phase, AC circuit breakers to British Rail (BR) electrification schemes over the past thirty years. The use of bulk oil breakers on the early main line electrification between Euston, Manchester and Liverpool and other lines and the minimum oil circuit breakers on the original 25kV portion of the Great Eastern line electrification is examined. The issues involved in the decision to move from oil circuit breakers to vacuum circuit breakers for the extension of the West Coast electrification from Weaver Junction to Glasgow in the mid 1970's are reviewed. The author also examines recent changes in the design and enclosure of 25kV switchgear and discusses the application of such equipment to future British Rail electrification projects from an operational, maintenance and economic viewpoint.
