Introduction of AC induction motor drives into suburban high speed EMUs is carried out extensively in Japan. The authors describe the high power GTO (GTO thyristor) voltage source inverter which drives eight motors. The 3000 A 4500 V GTO and the heat-pipes are very useful for the reduction in size and weight of the equipment, and the new gate drive circuit has also helped to this purpose.
