A description of the knowledge-driven methodology and data structures necessary to solve the real-time electronic warfare problem effectively and efficiently is presented. The knowledge-driven system is written in a conventional high-level language, performs real-time operations, uses the Boeing real-time inference engine and operates on parallel distributed avionics processors. The development has successfully demonstrated real-time AI-driven EW processing for the modern combat environment by performing generic and specific radar and threat recognition, pulse filtering and processing, and multilevel missionized countermeasure selection. The system also demonstrates a state-of-the-art operator interface that provides effective system operation in semiautomatic and manual modes required by some combat mission scenarios. The knowledge-based expert system described has been implemented successfully as a prototype and integrated into a strategic mission simulation environment and the On Board Mission Management IR&D project simulation.
