The SGS Thomson VB020 electronic ignition control chip is described and illustrated with diagrammatic representations of the circuitry and the vertical bipolar structure in which an n-p-n power transistor is combined with a low-voltage isolated-junction integrated circuit on the same Si substrate. Its response to engine-speed-related input from a microprocessor card is outlined, and regulation of the 6 A nominal collector current to within +or-3% is explained. Some other power integrated circuits under development for automotive and industrial control purposes are cited briefly.
