The global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS) has been developed as a fully integrated system embodying the most suitable communication techniques, operating methods and shore based facilities so that every ship, wherever it operates, will be able to perform those communication functions considered essential for the safety of the ship itself and for other ships in its vicinity. The evolution of the system is outlined, and the radio services provided are discussed. The sea areas associated with the anticipated coverage of the system are described.
