Discusses how tracking comprises the means to collect, gather, filter and synthesize the information delivered by the various sensors for generating and displaying an accurate and understandable picture of the air situation. The identification function determines the identity of tracks through classification into categories, into type within the category and into sub-type, and so forth. This function uses external information that may be provided via tactical links or by intelligence, enabling the commander to assess the threat.
