Many Air Force programs require compliance with modular automatic test equipment (MATE) guidelines. For a manufacturer this means an instrument must have an interface that meets hardware requirements of the IEEE-488 bus and speaks and understands control interface intermediate language (CIIL). The IEEE-488 requirement is not a major problem because many instruments that could be used in ATE systems already have IEEE-488 or HP-IB capability. (HP-IB is Hewlett-Packard's implementation of the IEEE-488 interface standard.) The requirement to be CIIL-compatible is a problem, because many instruments are not programmed in this manner. To qualify commercial test equipment (CTE) in a MATE system, a manufacturer must provide the instruments with a CIIL instruction and response set. The solution is to develop a test module adapter (TMA) as described in the MATE specifications to provide the translation from CIIL to the instrument native language and to translate instrument responses to the expected CIIL response.
