Safer and simple measurement systems can result from the use of advanced sensor techniques. The author explains the technology, with particular reference to fibre optic sensors, both intrinsic and extrinsic, and silicon sensors in which the transducer element is an integral part of a chip. Also she considers some practical applications of these sensors including: gas sensing; robot detection; and automobiles.
