The CAMERA (Control and Monitoring Equipment Resource Allocation) expert system was developed for NASA to minimize crew workload in managing the communications of the proposed US space station. The authors describe the features of the CAMERA expert system and the methodology that was used to develop it. The methodology combines an extension of data-flow diagrams with rapid prototyping. This approach enabled swift implementation of the expert system in ART with minimal redefinition of knowledge and data structures.
