Many different types of sensor are used on an aircraft during flight testing including temperature probes, strain gauges, pressure sensors, accelerometers, flow meters and displacement transducers. It is difficult to use intelligent sensors in all these applications, but it is feasible to consider a system architecture in which the sensors are all connected to a bus which is, in turn, connected to a small data acquisition system. A fully universal sensor bus does not exist at the present time. However, a short-term solution is possible using one bus for pressure sensors and another for strain gauges and temperature probes. In the medium term, the IEEE 1451.3 standard, currently being specified, appears to be a solution.
