The high levels of radiation encountered in space and in the upper atmosphere can affect the on-board electronics in satellites, launch vehicles and aircraft. The main categories of radiatione in space have been classified into four distinct types; radiation belts, solar flares, cosmic radiation and the solar wind. Most of the risk to modern electronic systems arises from heavy ions. In geostationary and low polar orbits, these originate mainly as protons from solar flares. In medium earth orbits, the main source is trapped protons and the South Atlantic anomaly.
