A model of helmsman steering performance has been developed with a view to the simulation of safety-critical course shifts performed with large sea carriers. The model consists of a task model, a feedforward control model and a second-order dynamic control model. Estimates of the model parameters were obtained from an experiment in which human subjects with professional knowledge of ship steering executed turns with a simulated large container ship. Phase-plane trajectories generated with the model reflect helmsman control behaviours observed in the experiment.
