Application of LIMs (linear induction motors) to railcars enables the reduction of floor level to 800...850 mm and thus the reduction of subway tunnel cross section by 50 % as compared with conventional tunnels. The new generation of railcars implements high safety and economy levels on the basis of LIM drive, fuzzy control ATO and other advanced technologies. Each car is equipped with two single-sided LIMs. Standard gauge 1435 mm instead of narrow gauge 1067 mm was selected to accommodate as wide reaction plate as possible. The reaction rail (Al over back steel plate) is economically designed which, on the other hand, is not an optimum solution from the electromagnetic point of view. LIMs are fed with VVVF inverters using GTO technology. Each inverter feeds and controls 4 LIMs. A regenerative braking is used for deceleration. Inverters are flat and compact and can ba easily accomodated in the space under car floors.
