A linear motor driven railcar supported by steel wheels and capable of running through lines with steep gradients and sharp curves in subways of smaller cross section tunnels was developed. It has enabled a reduction in the construction costs of subway tunnels and was successful in test running for the first time in Japan. The initial targets established for this linear motor driven railcar were achieved and an outlook for practical use was obtained. The research and development background of this linear motor driven railcar as well as principal technologies such as linear motors, reaction plate and inverter are described below.
