In this paper, a kind of active actuator for vehice suspension is proposed, in which damper and stiffness can be adjusted at the same time. With a quarter car model (2 DOF), analysis and simulation is performed ,it is shown that this kind of active suspension can reach better ride comfort while not deteriorate suspension travel and unprung mass acceleration greatly. It may be used to control attitude and ride comfort as an integrated model. Improvements on vehicle performance are expected. Its key technology is the so called 'Skyhook' damper. Some good results of semi-active suspensions have been achieved. The adjusting of damper coeffcient has an important effect on ride comfort of vehicle. In the past research works the main point was focused on the improvement of ride comfort. In the future research, by active suspension the attitude controls (i.e. squat control, roll control and nose-dive control) and ride comfort as an integrated model will be studied. The actuator of the active suspension is one of the main tasks, now. The object is to design an active actuator in which damper and stiffness may be adjusted at the same time. Thus, the performance of the suspension can be controlled. Some promising results have been reached.
