The University of South Florida has designed, developed and is currently operating a solar powered (20kW) electric vehicle charging station and test facility. The charging station is capable of direct DC-DC charging which provides effective current control and is capable of routing unused PV power to the utility grid for future use. The charging station is also capable of providing utility interconnected charging. DC-DC charging is more efficient than DC-AC-DC charging and the present efficiency can be further improved by introducing a capability to vary the size of the series circuits when necessary.
