This paper has presented three diverse applications of an early PLC in solving automation needs in automotive component testing. The PLCs, with their easy, yet accurate, timer settings were a simple and flexible solution to laboratory situations that are often difficult or complex due to constantly changing operational needs. Reconfiguring control inputs from series to parallel is simpler, easier, and much less time consuming with a PLC compared to previous hard-wired methods. In all these cases, the hardware met the challenges of the project and environments, and will remain useful for many years.
