The paper presents a study of a brushless synchronous machine with two-part rotor which offers a potential solution to the problem of obtaining a constant-power speed range suitable for an electric vehicle drive. The rotor comprises axially-separated sections which contribute permanent-magnet and reluctance components. An analytical procedure is presented and computed performance characteristics are given for an experimental machine, using measured machine parameters.
