In this contribution the user interface design of the in-car information and navigation system called SOCRATES is described together with the design method and the design philosophy. The driver controls SOCRATES with a hand-held remote control and SOCRATES presents information to the driver via a colour display next to the wheel and via loudspeakers. A user centred approach is applied in the development of this user interface. By continuously simulating the design on a PC, feedback of both human factors experts and potential users could be collected to improve the user interface. SOCRATES is still in a prototype phase and is currently assessed by drivers in some 60 cars in Germany. Results will be used in the developmnet of new versions of driver information systems.
