The concept of optimising the operation conditions for a powertrain with a continuously variable transmission is a well trodden path and the possible benefits well appreciated, if not quantified. This paper reports work carried out on an engine transmission system, in test bed form, with electrically controlled inputs to both engine and transmission ratio. The novelty in this contribution lies principally in the control strategy adopted for the transmission which has demonstrated efficiency improvements in test bed operation. Estimated fuel consumption improvements for the power train are also discussed.
