The functional needs of railway systems are becoming diversified. In order to operate trains economically and efficiently and to realize the high technology railway systems of the future, it is neccessary to construct a railway information system which can not only control the entire train but is also capable of intelligent control. For such train information systems as ATI (autonomous train integrated system), Hitachi, Ltd. is conducting research on the development of an ATI applied train system with a flexible configuration so as to make train functions intelligent, reduce construction costs, and provide pathways towards new technologies. The core of an ATI system is the autonomous decentralized system which internally connects on-board equipment for the purpose of integrated diagnosis, maintenance, information service, and control functions. The ATI system can include a pendulum control system together with a monitoring system and passenger information system, all of which have been conventionally merchandised individually, in order to unite on-board equipment and thus realize information-intensive intelligent train control.
