The Department of Defense (DOD) and industry are faced with the challenge of producing and supporting future weapon systems in an era of shrinking defense budgets. A major player in meeting this challenge is the DOD Computer-aided Acquisition and Logistic Support (CALS) Initiative. CALS is a DOD and industry initiative and strategy to enable and accelerate integration of digital technical data for weapon system acquisition, design, manufacture, and support. CALS provides the framework for a move from current, paper-intensive acquisition and logistics processes to an automated and integrated mode of operation. Today, weapon systems data is most often delivered on paper or as reduced images on microfilm aperture cards. Digital delivery is limited. In the future the Air Force envisions an Integrated Weapon System Data Base (IWSDB), with on-line access to user specific information as required. Data will be spawned for a common product model to support various functions such as design, manufacture, and logistic support at all levels, including down to the flight-line. CALS directs the creation, storage and use of technical data in standard digital forms to be accessible to all users from an IWSDB.
