Intelligent Vehicle Highway Systems (IVHS) projects utilizing traffic information broadcast to automotive route guidance systems, hand held devices, and traveler information kiosks are underway or being launched in several metropolitan areas in North America. Some of these projects include traffic monitoring on major arterials using embedded sensors, camera surveillance, and other methods. The information on traffic flow derived from this traffic monitoring effort can be communicated with travelers by a variety of means. The authors review methods utilized in projects they are involved with in Orlando, Chicago, and Toronto. This paper reviews the potential benefits of an open International Traveler Information Interchange Standard (ITIIS) and specifically discusses the importance of a Standard Location Referencing (SLR) system as a component of that standard.
