Environmental concern over localised air and noise pollution is demanding zero-emissions all-electric vehicles as replacements for internal combustion engine powered vehicles. However, whilst their practicality for urban and light commercial use is now well established, relatively little attention has been focussed on the higher performance end of the automotive market. Nevertheless, a battery powered all-electric drive-train has the capability of at last matching and possibly exceeding the acceleration performance of an internal combustion engine, as well as offering improved controllability and dynamic performance as a consequence of the continously variable electric power transmission. However, it is never likely to compete in terms of range.
